Treatment

Exposure and response prevention (ERP)

ERP is the first-line, evidence-based treatment for OCD — gradually facing the thoughts or situations that trigger anxiety, while stepping back from the rituals that maintain it.

How ERP works

ERP is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy. With your therapist you build a graded plan, approach feared situations at a manageable pace, and learn to resist the compulsion that usually follows. Over time, the anxiety attached to the trigger settles on its own. It is always collaborative and never a surprise.

ERP for children and adolescents

For younger clients, parents are part of the treatment. A meaningful part of the work is helping families step back from accommodation — the well-meaning reassurance and avoidance that quietly keep OCD going.

Does ERP work over telehealth?

Yes. Evidence — including a randomised controlled trial of remotely delivered CBT/ERP for adolescents with OCD co-authored by Dr Turner — shows ERP can be delivered effectively by videoconference and telephone, widening access for families outside metropolitan areas.

What we treat with ERP

ERP is the core treatment for OCD and is also used for body dysmorphic disorder.

Frequently asked questions

What is ERP?+

Exposure and response prevention is the part of CBT for OCD that involves gradually facing the triggers for obsessions while learning to step back from the rituals that briefly relieve them. It is delivered collaboratively and paced to what feels manageable.

Is ERP distressing for my child?+

ERP is approached in a collaborative and gradual way. It is never a surprise. Your child is always involved in setting goals, they have a voice in the therapy plan and are carefully supported to face their fears. We try to make therapy fun.

How many sessions does ERP take?+

There is no single answer. A common course for OCD is around 12–20 sessions, sometimes more for complex or long-standing presentations.

Can ERP be done over telehealth?+

Yes. Evidence including a randomised controlled trial co-authored by Dr Turner shows ERP can be delivered effectively by video and telephone.
