Perinatal anxiety and depression

The perinatal period — pregnancy through the first postnatal year — is a time of significant change. Anxiety and depression in this period are common and treatable, and getting support early matters for parent and baby.

Signs and symptoms

  • Persistent low mood, tearfulness, or loss of pleasure
  • Excessive worry about the baby's health or safety
  • Intrusive thoughts about harm coming to the baby (these are common and rarely indicate intent)
  • Difficulty sleeping even when the baby is sleeping
  • Feeling disconnected from the baby or partner
  • Loss of confidence in one's ability to parent

How therapy helps

CBT adapted for the perinatal period

Cognitive behavioural therapy adapted for the perinatal period has the strongest evidence base. Treatment is paced for the realities of pregnancy or early parenthood and, where appropriate, coordinates with GP, obstetric, or psychiatric care.

Who Dr Turner works with

Dr Turner works with parents and parents-to-be in pregnancy and the first postnatal year.

Frequently asked questions

Are intrusive thoughts about my baby a sign I'm a danger?+

Intrusive thoughts about harm to a baby are common in the perinatal period and are typically the opposite of intent — they are distressing precisely because they conflict with the parent's care for the baby. They are worth raising with a clinician and are treatable.

Is therapy compatible with breastfeeding?+

Psychological therapy is fully compatible with breastfeeding. Where medication is being considered, that decision sits with the GP, psychiatrist, and obstetrician in consultation with the parent.
